Art Institutes and Music Conservatories

Passion for their art unites the students at art institutes and music conservatories.  This type of specialty school is ideal for students focused on developing their talents, for those who cannot imagine a life without their art.  If you’re still unsure if you want your art to be a vocation or an avocation, you’re probably better off choosing a liberal arts college or a comprehensive university with a really strong art or music department.

Art institutes and music conservatories immerse students in their specialty.  In these focused environments, talent is quickly developed.  Surrounded by others passionate about their work, students are animated and energized through their interactions with gifted instructors and peers.  Specialty schools help students turn their gifts into fulfilling careers.

But what if you’re not really sure about your future career, or perhaps you have other interests in addition to art or music.  The intense focus of specialty schools comes at a price—the lack of a balanced liberal arts education.  A broad liberal arts background provides students with more future flexibility than the more-limited fine arts degree.  Liberal arts programs stress the development of communication skills, both verbal and written, which are a plus for any future career. Attending a liberal arts college exposes students to a broader spectrum of ideas, possible careers, and people.

Other options also exist.  Partnerships between institutes and universities open the possibility of a combined degree.  Another alternative is to get your undergraduate degree at a liberal arts institution, and then follow up on your passion with a master’s degree from an art institute or conservatory.  Consider your options carefully, think long and hard about your commitment to your art, and explore all possibilities before making your final choice.
