Been There, Done That

Everyone learns through experience. The responses of a group of college freshman, asked at the end of their first year what they wished they’d have known before starting college, may be of interest to this year’s college-bound graduates. What follows is “been there, done that” advice. “I should have…”

  • done the things I like the least, first.
  • known that dark things can’t be washed with whites in hot water.
  • realized that people can be good roommates even if they’re not people you’d choose as friends.
  • known that when I need help, it’s available, but that I have to go after it myself.
  • kept up with reading assignments so that I wouldn’t have had so many “all nighters”.
  • learned earlier that it’s the differences among people that make life interesting.
  • been more open to new ideas and new people.
  • gone to more campus concerts, plays, and speakers. I wish I had gotten more involved in the life of the school.
  • called my mother when things were great so she wouldn’t only hear from me when I had a problem.
